Krampusnacht in the Austrian Alps
Talk about some scary, awesome nights. Krampusnacht or the night of Krampus is one of our favorite old traditions in Central Europe. An old pagan symbol, Krampus comes the night before St. Nicholas (In the Alps that is, farther north he comes with St. Nick). Krampus was supposed to come and take away the kids that had been bad during the year. Now the annual festival covers a series of Krampuslaufs or Krampus runs with brigades of people dressed like Krampus walking through the streets, dragging chains with cauldrons of fire (jumping at the crowds watching the runs).
Learn from a passionate professional
Our photographers are both passionate and knowledgeable about photography and the area. We take you to all the good spots and let you enjoy the journey along the way. We capture as many sunrises and sunsets as weather and the small group will allow, and after shooting, we return to the hotel for a couple post-editing tutorials.
Group size & Options
Not everyone runs at the same pace, and our tours are built to accommodate everyone. We keep group sizes small, so everyone will have some one on one time with the pro. We also will offer different options for everyone. Perhaps someone wants to work on astrophotography late at night, maybe someone else really wants sunrises. We try to be as flexible as possible, so you don't feel like you have to do everything, but you can still get as most out of the experience as you want.
Tour Price $1,700/person

Tour Dates
Dec 5-8, 2017
Day 1
The first day kicks off with a bang as we pick you up at the Salzburg train station and take you to your hotel in Salzburg. We relax for a little bit and prepare for the Krampuslauf taking place that evening in Salzburg. It will be a good warm up for the big one taking place later in the week in Bad Goisern.
Day 2
The second day we head over to the pristine, mountain lake village of Hallstatt. We'll spend a couple days here, so you can enjoy the atmosphere slowly and also figure out where you really want your photos.
Day 3
We'll be out for the sunrise, and then relax in the village and do a post-processing workshop. As evening approaches, we'll head to Bad Goisern for the big Krampuslauf. This is part of the UNESCO tradition in the area, and over 1200 people arrive dressed as Krampus and his minions. This is an event you will surely not want to miss.
Day 4
We check out of our hotel in Hallstatt and take you back to the train station in Salzburg and say goodbye.
Additional Info
Krampusnacht can be somewhat terrifying. It is not unusual for some of the participants to actually jump into the crowd, and there can be some danger from the different types of fire they drag through the streets. We will take necessary precautions to not get too close with our photography equipment, but always be aware and be careful as this is a somewhat dangerous festival, and we are not liable if a Krampus jumps at you and your equipment breaks or you get injured.
That having been said, it is rare for something like that to happen.

You will arrive in Salzburg at around noon at the train station, and we will pick you up and take you to your hotel from there.
